DindallearnedanimationatCalArts.HebeganworkingatDisneyin1980.HeworkedonTheFoxandtheHound,TheBlackCauldron,Mickey'sChristmasCarol,andTheGreatMouseDetective,followingaverysimilaranimationstyleinallmovies.Thisstyleconsistedofsimilarbackgroundswithdelicatedanimationandcomplexcharactereffects,andwaswell-received.Aftertheseprojects,DindalleftDisneybrieflytoworkonoutsideprojects.Hereturnedtothestudioin1987andgothisfirstheadroleasananimatorforDisney'sTheLittleMermaid.HelaterworkedasheadanimatorforthemovieTheRescuersDownUnder.Hedirectedtheanimatedeffectsforthelive-action1991filmTheRocketeer,andgotajobinthe1992animatedfilmAladdin.Dindal'sdirectorialdebutwasCatsDon'tDance,whichwasreleasedin1997,threeyearsbeforeTheEmperor'sNewGroovewasreleasedin2000.InCatsDon'tDanceDindalvoicedaminorcharacter.Althoughthefilmwasn'tpubliclysuccessful,itwontheAnnieAwardforBestAnimatedFilmandDindalwasnominatedfordirecting.TheEmperor'sNewGroovewasinitiallyexpectedtobeaclassicDisneymusicalfeaturecalledKingdomoftheSun.However,thatideadidn'tworkout,andDindal,alongwithChrisWilliamsandDavidReynolds,drasticallychangedthescripttoacomedy.Duringthesix-yearproduction,hestartedtoworkonCatsDon'tDance,aTurnerBroadcasting(sincemergedintoWarnerBros.)animatedmusicalproduction.DindalworkedonChickenLittle,anotherDisneyproduction,whichneededahugeanimationteam.Themoviewasasuccess,andreceivedgoodreviews.Dindalhadtwosmallvoicerolesinthefilm.ThemoviewasnominatedtoseveralAnnies,butDindalwasnotnominatedasadirector.Duringthemovie'sproduction,DisneyproducedKronk'sNewGrooveasadirect-to-videofeature.DindalwasworkingonChickenLittle,sohedidn'tgetapositiononthestaff.Later,DindalcreatedTheEmperor'sNewSchool.
