WilliamHenry"Bill"Cosby,Jr.(bornJuly12,1937)isanAmericancomedian,actor,author,televisionproducer,educator,musicianandactivist.Aveteranstand-upperformer,hegothisstartatvariousclubs,thenlandedastarringroleinthe1960sactionshow,ISpy.Helaterstarredinhisownseries,thesituationcomedyTheBillCosbyShow.Hewasoneofthemajorcharactersonthechildren'stelevisionseriesTheElectricCompanyforitsfirsttwoseasons,andcreatedtheeducationalcartooncomedyseriesFatAlbertandtheCosbyKids,aboutagroupofyoungfriendsgrowingupinthecity.Cosbyhasalsoactedinanumberoffilms.Duringthe1980s,Cosbyproducedandstarredinwhatisconsideredtobeoneofthedecade'sdefiningsitcoms,TheCosbyShow,whichairedeightseasonsfrom1984to1992.ThesitcomhighlightedtheexperiencesandgrowthofanaffluentAfrican-Americanfamily.Healsoproducedthespin-offsitcomADifferentWorld,whichbecamesecondtoTheCosbyShowinratings.HestarredinthesitcomCosbyfrom1996to2000andhostedKidsSaytheDarndestThingsfortwoseasons.Hehasbeenasought-afterspokesman,andhasendorsedanumberofproducts,includingJell-O,Kodakfilm,Ford,TexasInstruments,andCoca-Cola,includingNewCoke.In2002,scholarMolefiKeteAsanteincludedhiminhisbook,the100GreatestAfricanAmericans.In1976,CosbyearnedaDoctorofEducationdegreefromtheUniversityofMassachusetts.Forhisdoctoralresearch,hewroteadissertationentitled,"AnIntegrationoftheVisualMediaVia'FatAlbertAndTheCosbyKids'IntotheElementarySchoolCurriculumasaTeachingAidandVehicletoAchieveIncreasedLearning".
